CALORIE RESTRICTION (CR) - RESVERATROL AND LONG LIFE

Filed under: Nutrition — WorkerBee @ 1:12 pm

If you’re like me you’ve probably dreamed of a magical way of losing weight while keeping up with the ice cream and all the other good stuff.

But I’m afraid at the end we all have to admit the ugly truth – losing weight is a matter of net calorie loss. If you take in more calories than you give out, it turns into “love handles” real fast. It’s as simple as that.

Reducing the calorie intake actually seems to do more than just guarantee a slim physique. According to the recent research, “calorie restriction” (CR) seems to be fighting the aging process and stretching the life span of lab mice as well.

Various researchers claim that CR adds 30% to 40% to lab animals’ life span. In human terms, it’s like living 80 or 104 years. If you know you’d be living those extra 24 years in relatively good health, wouldn’t you go for it?

Which brings us to the frequently-reported health benefits of red wine (in moderation, of course) and the chemical compound “resveratrol.”

Resveratrol, which is found in red wine, boosted yeast cells’ life span by a whopping 70% in research conducted by Harvard Medical School’s David Sinclair. This is the same effect achieved by CR. SO now some folks are asking whether we can just take resveratrol pills instead of skipping on creamy ice cream to live longer? That’s sweet music to my ears.

However before you rush to your friendly pharmacy and ask for resveratrol pills please be aware that research is still not conducted on higher mammalians like human beings and the amount given to lab mice is of course is massive. You would need to drink hundreds of glasses of red wine a day to get the resveratrol dozes taken by the lab animals. You may end up living longer but you’d be so drunk you probably won’t remember much.

But joking aside, there’s some serious research conducted these days both into CR and chemical compounds with the same life-extending effects as CR. Sirtris Pharmaceuticals (of Dr. Sinclair), Elixir Pharmaceuticals, BioMarker Pharmaceuticals, and LifeGen Technologies are just a few of the private research labs where some really smart folks are trying to pry open the secrets of longevity.

Until they find the mechanism that triggers long life and come up with the magic life-extension pill, it’ll probably still be a good idea to limit my trips to the frig.
